In Milano, steel arrives as billet and leaves as the thinnest structural tube in cycling. Nothing here is bought and re-badged: the drawing benches, the mandrels, the discipline — all of it is the factory A.L. Colombo started building in 1919.

cold, drawn, again.
“Heat is the easy way to move steel. Cold is the way that makes it stronger.”
Premium sets begin as solid bar, machine-perforated and drawn cold over and over until the wall reads 0.38 mm. Each pass work-hardens the crystal; each anneal resets it exactly as far as the recipe demands. The tube keeps the memory of every pull — that memory is the strength.

thicker where it counts.
“A butted tube is an argument about where the stress actually goes. We have been winning it since 1938.”
To give strength without weight, Columbus pioneered butted tubes — walls that thicken at the joints where stresses concentrate and thin through the span where they do not. Angelo Luigi Colombo designed and built the company’s own butting machines; their descendants still run in Milano, drawing tapering walls over shaped mandrels.

the shape of stress.
“A round tube is a compromise. Sometimes the load asks for an oval, a helix, a blade.”
Taper-gauge elliptical fork blades, conical helix butting, the oriented ovals of MAX — the first patented non-round tubeset in cycling — and the HSS sections of Spirit. Shaping orients the steel along the direction the stress actually travels, and the archive of shapes runs a century deep.

trust, verified.
“The builder never sees the furnace chart. So every tube has to carry the proof in its own crystal.”
Alloy composition held regular and close to nominal for an honest weld bead; crystal structure controlled from casting solidification to finished tube; stress-relief after cold work; visual quality-control inspection and hand marking of each tube before it ships. Today more than 900 tube types leave Milano this way.
