A small factory opens under the name A.L. Colombo, drawing steel tube for the bicycle makers of a rebuilding Italy — Bianchi, Dei, Atala, Maino. The order book fills; curiosity does the rest. Within a decade the same benches are drawing tube for seaplanes, road vehicles, furniture and ski poles.

The name — and the dove — are coined for chromed-steel furniture built with the rationalist architects: Figini, Pollini, Terragni, Pagano. Tubular chairs for the modern house, drawn on the same benches as the racing tube. Industry and elegance were never separate ideas under this mark.

Columbus tube goes into Caproni aircraft, and into the airframes that carry De Pinedo and Balbo across the Atlantic in 1933. Moto Guzzi builds its chassis on Columbus. The lesson of aviation — strength is nothing without lightness — never leaves the company.

Columbus releases its first chromium-molybdenum bicycle tubesets with elliptical fork blades — and builds the butting machines to make them, in-house, to its own patents. Variable wall thickness puts steel where the frame needs it and nowhere else. The modern racing frame starts here.

Under Gilberto Colombo, the company draws chassis tube for Lancia, Maserati and Ferrari — frames that run under Fangio, Ascari and Villoresi. What Grand Prix engineering demands of a tube feeds straight back into the bicycle catalogue.

Columbus is incorporated as its own company under Antonio Colombo, and the catalogue accelerates: taper-gauge elliptical fork blades, conical helix butting, then Air — the first fully aerodynamic tubeset. The dove becomes the mark every framebuilder reaches for, and the sticker riders want on the downtube.

More than 900 tube types across five proprietary materials, drawn cold in Milano. XCr takes the iF Design Award in 2008; Hyperion opens the titanium chapter. A century in, the factory still answers the same question it did in 1919 — how little steel can do this much work?
